Pre-Running Part 2 Making Do With What We Have When September hit, our pre-running got kicked into high gear. We knew that it was time to start thinking about heading for Mexico every weekend it was possible to do so. We realized that we were not going to be able to do quick, cheap weekend trips to Mexico with a 40 foot motorhome and a 32 foot trailer. The expenses of the race were starting to load up; $1500.00 for race registration, $500.00 for extra radio communications equipment, $1200.00 to race prep the race bike, $200.00 for an extra GPS, $500.00 for pit crew supplies, $500.00 for extra air filters, tires, and other spare parts, etc., etc., etc. So we decided to make a very small trailer out of scrap metal from a burnt trailer in the backyard (leftover from the big Ramona fires 2 years prior). With the help of our neighbor, Chris, we made a small trailer that would only be big enough to fit our pre-running bikes; Tim's Motorcycle, and one of my quads. The trailer was small enough to pull behind my Explorer, which was the vehicle that got the best gas mileage and just big enough for Tim and I to sleep in. Compared to all of the high dollar race teams, we knew that we would be a site for sore eyes while heading for the race course in this set-up. But this was the only way we were going to be able to pre-run every weekend. That, and borrowing my mom's gas card.
